Chamomile Flowers

Botanical Name: Matricaria recutita
Common Names: German Chamomile, Wild Chamomile, Hungarian Chamomile
Family: Asteraceae
Origin: Croatia/Bulgaria

German chamomile is an annual herb with delicate, daisy-like flowers and a sweet apple-like fragrance. The plant grows low to the ground with slender stems, feathery leaves, and small white petals surrounding a vibrant yellow center.

Historical & Cultural Background:
Chamomile has been cherished since ancient Egypt, where it was associated with the sun god Ra. Greek physicians described its pleasant aroma and its use as a comforting tea. In medieval Europe, chamomile lawns were planted near walking paths so that the scent would release when stepped upon.

Traditional & Modern Applications:

  • Brewed as a fragrant herbal tea, enjoyed hot or iced

  • Added to bath blends for its relaxing aroma

  • Used in potpourri and pillow sachets for a calming scent

Harvest & Processing:
Harvested during peak bloom, the flowers are dried gently to maintain their golden centers and floral fragrance.

Precautions:
Persons with allergies to plants in the Asteraceae family should exercise caution. Consult a healthcare practitioner before use if pregnant, nursing, or taking medications.
